Meet my maker

Sailmaker, that is.

I met up with Ryan Malmgren at MadSails this afternoon to have a look at the draft sailplan for the boat. Ryan has a ton of experience building small boat sails and we (Kevin and I) are really stoked to have him working on our project. Truth be told, I think Ryan is pretty stoked to be involved as well.

The main is going to be square-topper with about 160sqft of area. That should give us ample horsepower in the light stuff, and the sqaure top should auto-depower nicely in the puffs.
OK, time to go finish fairing the decks so I can flip the little beast on Sunday.

Hi Andrew-

Total upwind area should be about 240sqft/22sqm. Does this sounds reasonable to you? Not sure yet how big the kite is going to be---the 480sqft/45sqm number has been batted about.

yeah i think we are at 22sq/m upwind. we only have an 800mm long head in the main. i was thinking maybe a bigger headed main for light air maybe at about 1300mm but i dont think the area gain is worth it. we know we are a heavy breeze boat far more than light. clear air is your friend in the light. my allpurpose reacher is 40.5sq/m very good for reaching, its a bit on the fat side but goes well. the runner is pretty massive at 52sq/m, compare that to an etchells chute at 45sq/m! sails look good. expect to be sitting with only one arse cheek on the deck and the other hanging over the transom with the the crew nearly sitting in your lap in a blow, steer up and over the waves and you'll have a sweet ride. will be good to see all your guys hit the water. ill be interested to see how you guys go!
